Military training in Hastings, Northumberland and Prince Edward counties of Ontario

June 10, 2023 – Ottawa, Ont. – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Residents in Hastings, Northumberland, and Prince Edward counties are advised that personnel from the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command will be conducting training in the area from June 12 to 28, 2024. Specifically, training will be centered around the communities of Belleville, Campbellford, Picton, Quinte West, Tweed and Stirling, Ontario.

Residents may notice an increase in military vehicles and aircraft, see uniformed and non-uniformed military personnel with personal firearms and hear noises associated with explosives and small firearms. Only simulated and blank ammunition and explosives will be used as part of these training exercises.

Military exercises in urban and rural environments that are unknown to our personnel leads to greater expertise that enable us to serve the national interest wherever we operate. The Canadian Special Operations Forces Command is extremely thankful for the support of local landowners and the understanding of the communities within which it conducts valuable training.

Notice: Watermain Flushing and Hydrant Testing 2024

The Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) will be flushing watermains and testing fire hydrants between Monday May 13th and Friday May 17th. Flushing will take place between the hours of 8am and 3pm.

This preventive maintenance practice ensures the proper operation of fire hydrants and flushes accumulated sediment from the distribution system. While flushing is underway, short periods of low pressure and discoloured water can be expected. Any discolouration is temporary and is not a health hazard. To restore clarity, remove the aerator and turn on a cold water tap until the water runs clear. Residents are asked to minimize water consumption and avoid doing laundry when flushing activity is observed in your vicinity.

If you have any questions regarding the flushing program, please contact the Water & Sewer Department at 613-396-3436.

Please read the full notice here for more information.

EP Week 2024 – Public Education

Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week) 2024, scheduled for May 5-11, is a pivotal time for individuals and communities to enhance their preparedness for various emergencies.

This year the theme in Ontario is, "Plan for every season” which underscores the importance of understanding local hazards and taking proactive steps to mitigate potential impacts throughout the year. Community members and their families are encouraged to develop an emergency plan, assemble a 72 hour emergency kit, and stay informed about the most effective responses to potential crises throughout the year. Our website has many links to information and resources that will help in the planning and preparedness process. Being prepared for an emergency is not just the responsibility of the municipality but a collective one, involving individuals, families, and communities.

Follow us on our Facebook page where throughout the week we will be sharing information regarding specific emergencies that can impact you and your families.
