WASTEWATER SYSTEM BYPASS AND OVERFLOW QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q. What is a bypass?
A. A Bypass can occur when a Sewage Treatment Plant cannot treat all of the wastewater coming into a facility. A portion of one or more treatment processes are then Bypassed to protect the Sewage Treatment Plant operations from being negatively impacted.
Q. What is an Overflow?
A. An Overflow is similar to a Bypass, except the discharge may not receive any treatment.
Q. How do these Bypass / Overflow Events impact the Environment?
A. Bypass / Overflow Events in Deseronto mix with the treated effluent from the treatment plant. Operators take samples of the Final Effluent and Overflow discharge to get an understanding of how it may be impacting the Environment. The results from these samples are also reported to the MECP and our local Health Unit.
Q. Why do we allow Bypass / Overflow Events to occur?
A. In most cases this cannot be avoided. Severe rain events along with snowmelt are the main cause of Events for Deseronto. Sump pumps, foundation drains and roof downspouts add extraneous water to the sewer. Groundwater can also infiltrate the Collection System and adds even more water to the system.
