Emergency Response;

Emergency Preparedness Week 2022

Welcome to Emergency Preparedness Week, which is an annual national preparedness campaign focused on encouraging and promoting emergency preparedness to the residents of Canada.

The most important part of preparing for an emergency is to have a plan.  Emergencies happen quickly and with little warning. It is important to think about what you would do in different situations and the best ways to prepare for those situations.

For example, a household emergency plan will help you learn what situations you need to plan for; how to reach family members; safe locations for evacuation; and emergency numbers to name a few.  It is also important to review your plan with family members so that each family member knows what to do in an emergency.

Please visit the Emergency Preparedness section of our website where you will find useful information on how you can make a household emergency plan for your family.

Join us later this week on our Facebook page where you can participate in a challenge to win some great products to help you “get prepared”.

The Town of Deseronto reminds residents to be cautious and mindful of ice safety.

Winter is here and the Town of Deseronto would like to remind residents to be cautious and mindful of ice safety.

The ice has recently formed in the bay, and although it may look safe it is not likely thick enough or stable enough to support activities on the ice.  Ice conditions are constantly changing and ice does not freeze at a uniform thickness.

Good quality ice is clear and blue looking.  White, opaque ice indicates the presence of snow or wet snow within the ice as is only half as strong as clear blue ice.  Grey looking ice indicates the presence of water and should be avoided.

Ice Thickness Guide (for clear blue ice only)

3" (7cm) or less STAY OFF - Ice is not safe

4" (10cm) Ice Fishing, Walking, Cross Country Skiing

6" (15cm) Snowmobile, ATV

8" (20cm) Light Truck or Car - 3500 pounds (1600 kilograms)

12" (30cm) Medium Pickup - 8000 pounds (3600 kilograms)
