Request for Volunteer Board Members for the Deseronto Public Library

The Town of Deseronto is currently seeking letters of interest from individuals who are looking to become a member of the Deseronto Public Library Board.  This position involves a commitment of one meeting every month, with a summer and winter holiday break (minimum of 9 meetings per year), and possible supplementary meetings as required.  Any person is qualified to sit on the board if they meet the following criteria:

  • A person is qualified to be appointed as a member of a board who is a member of the appointing council or,

    1. is at least eighteen years old;

    2. is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada within the meaning of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada);

  • is,

  • (i) a resident of the municipality for which the board is established in the case of a public library board, a resident of one of the municipalities for which the board is established in the case of a union board, a resident of one of the participating municipalities in the case of a county library board, or a resident of the area served by the board in the case of a county library co-operative board,

  • (ii) a resident of a municipality that has a contract with the board under section 29,

  • (iii) a resident of the board area of a local service board that has a contract with the board under section 29,

  • (iv) a member of an Indian band that has a contract with the board under section 29, or

  • (v) a member of a second board that has entered into a contract with the board to purchase from it library services for the residents of the second board; and

  • (d) is not employed by the board or by the municipality or county or, in the case of a union board, by any of the affected municipalities.  R.S.O. 1990, c. P.44, s. 10 (1); 2002, c. 18, Sched. F, s. 3 (9); 2019, c. 14, Sched. 12, s. 1.

The duty of the Deseronto Public Library Board is to provide comprehensive, effective, and efficient library service that reflects the community’s needs and builds community capacity.

The stakeholders of today’s libraries expect strong leadership.  Consequently, modern governance must reach to embrace new ideas and forge strong relationships that will support the library in its vision, mission, and values.

The Deseronto Fitness Centre Re-Opening November 4, 2022

The Deseronto Fitness Centre will re-open on Friday November 4th, 2022.  The Fitness Centre will only be open during the times below; when the arena is open to the public:

Sunday                              9 am – 3 pm

Monday thru Friday        6 pm – 9 pm

Saturdays                         8 am – 1 pm

 Regular membership rates will apply.  Please stop by the Town Hall to have your membership card renewed.  All limitations/restrictions have been removed.

Boot Camp and Yoga Nights at Deseronto Community Center

The Town of Deseronto is pleased to announce that they have partnered with Mandi Wilson of Elite Coach Mandi. Mandi will be hosting indoor Boot Camp on Tuesday nights and Yoga on Thursday nights at 6:00 pm at the Deseronto Community Centre.

No need to pre-register – just bring your mat, water and weights and join in on the fun.

Due to the Town’s sponsorship, there will only be a nominal fee of $3.00 per class

Fall Leaf Collection - November 14-17, 2022

The Public Works Department will be performing a fall curbside clean-up of leaves starting Monday, November 14th, 2022 until Thursday, November 17th, 2022.

All leaves must be RAKED TO THE CURB (NOT IN BAGS) no later than Sunday, November 13, as the Town staff will only be collecting in each area once. 

This is for LEAVES ONLY; no other materials will be picked up at this time.

Please be patient with Town staff as the collection process may take longer than expected due to physical distancing.  Please do not approach Town staff during collection.

Winter Fun At The Community Centre

The Community Centre is open for another season of winter fun!

  

Free public skating is open Sunday from 2-3 pm and Wednesday from 6-7 pm come out and enjoy 

The Canteen is open to serve refreshments 

The Gym will be returning for modified use – more information to come shortly

New community recreational programming scheduled to start in November – details and schedule to follow shortly

We are also still looking for interested individuals and groups that would be interested in running programming for the community – if you have a talent, pitch your idea and we will see if we can make it work Deseronto!

Culbertson Land Tract MBQ Settlement Update

On October 3rd, 2022, The MBQ had a signing ceremony for a Partial Settlement Agreement between Canada and the MBQ for a portion of the Culbertson Tract. This partial claim settlement consists of approx. 299.43 acres identified in purple in the map below, commonly known as the Quarry and Kimmett’s farm.  Approx. 97 acres of this settlement is farmland located in the northern part of our community on Deseronto (Boundary) Road.

As per Federal policy regarding land settlements between the MBQ and the Canadian government, the Town of Deseronto was not provided details or was part of this process.

We, along with our legal team, are working with our Provincial and Federal representatives to provide more details as to the next steps in this process and will let the Community know as we find out more.
