The Town of Deseronto reminds residents to be cautious and mindful of ice safety.

Winter is here and the Town of Deseronto would like to remind residents to be cautious and mindful of ice safety.

The ice has recently formed in the bay, and although it may look safe it is not likely thick enough or stable enough to support activities on the ice.  Ice conditions are constantly changing and ice does not freeze at a uniform thickness.

Good quality ice is clear and blue looking.  White, opaque ice indicates the presence of snow or wet snow within the ice as is only half as strong as clear blue ice.  Grey looking ice indicates the presence of water and should be avoided.

Ice Thickness Guide (for clear blue ice only)

3" (7cm) or less STAY OFF - Ice is not safe

4" (10cm) Ice Fishing, Walking, Cross Country Skiing

6" (15cm) Snowmobile, ATV

8" (20cm) Light Truck or Car - 3500 pounds (1600 kilograms)

12" (30cm) Medium Pickup - 8000 pounds (3600 kilograms)

QUINTE CONSERVATION ISSUES A WATER SAFETY STATEMENT FOR UNSAFE ICE CONDITIONS

Water Safety Statement

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

December 17, 2020

Due to changing weather conditions, ice is starting to form on lakes and rivers within the Watershed.

Quinte Conservation would like to remind residents that this early in the season, ice conditions can be very unpredictable, unsafe, and difficult to assess as above average flows in rivers and streams prevent the formation of stable ice surfaces.

Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution around all waterways as stream banks and fast moving water are both extremely dangerous. Adults are urged to keep children and pets away from all waterways, to stay off the ice, and avoid water control structures at all times. Hypothermia is a major concern for anyone who may fall into open water.

While Quinte Conservation does not measure ice thickness for recreational activities, the organization provides information on watershed safety conditions.

Quinte Conservation is issuing a Water Safety Statement regarding the changing ice conditions. A Water Safety Statement indicates that high flows, unsafe banks, melting ice or other factors could be dangerous for users such as anglers, boaters, swimmers, children or pets. Flooding is not expected.

This message will be in effect until (or updated before) January 15, 2021.

Quinte Conservation is a community-based environmental protection agency. It serves 18 municipalities in the watersheds of the Moira, Napanee and Salmon Rivers and Prince Edward County. It provides cost-effective environmental expertise and leadership. Quinte Conservation’s main goal is to create a sustainable ecosystem where people and nature live in harmony. More information about Quinte Conservation is available at www.quinteconservation.ca.

Ontario Extends COVID-19 Orders to January 20, 2021.

Ontario

News Release

Action is taken to protect vulnerable populations and preserve health care capacity

TORONTO — The Ontario government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, is extending all orders currently in force under the Reopening Ontario (A Flexible Response to COVID-19) Act, 2020 (ROA) until January 20, 2021. This extension will support the safe delivery of health care and other critical services until COVID-19 vaccines are approved and widely available.

"Safeguarding the health and well-being of Ontarians remains our top priority at every stage of our COVID-19 response," said Solicitor General Sylvia Jones. "As we prepare to implement a safe and effective immunization program, extending these orders will ensure tools remain in place to address urgent public health situations until all Ontarians can be vaccinated."

Ontario continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic by taking the actions needed to support and keep Ontarians safe. Effective December 7, 2020, under the Keeping Ontario Safe and Open Framework, the government, in consultation with health officials, amended O.Reg. 363/20 (Stages of Reopening) to move three public health units to new levels. This action imposes stricter public health measures in an effort to reduce transmission in these regions and avoid broader closures.

The government also made amendments to O. Reg 82/20 (Rules for Areas in Stage 1) under the ROA, which applies to public health unit regions in the Stage 1 lockdown. These amendments, which came into force December 4, 2020, permit indoor farmer's markets that primarily sell groceries, to be open. For post-secondary institutions, the amendments increase the limit on the number of persons permitted in an instructional space at any one time for in-person instruction or in-person exams from 10 to 50 people for certain programs critical to supporting the health care workforce as set out in the order.

The list of orders under the ROA that have been extended can be found online on the Government of Ontario's website.

QUICK FACTS

  • The ROA came into force on July 24, 2020 to ensure important measures remained in place after the provincial declared emergency came to an end.

  • The ROA allows certain orders to be amended, subject to criteria, and does not allow new orders to be created.

  • Under the ROA, orders can be extended for up to 30 days at a time, and the government must report on all order extensions to the Select Committee on Emergency Management Oversight.

  • The ROA requires the Premier to table a report on any amendments or extensions of any orders within 120 days after the first anniversary of the ROA coming into force.

Media Release: Hastings Prince Edward Region Moves to Yellow – Protect Level

Hastings and Prince Edward Counties/November 27, 2020

Today, the Government of Ontario placed Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH) region in the The Yellow – Protect level of the Keeping Ontario Safe & Open  COVID response framework. With 27 new cases being reported in the region over the past 7 days, the local incidence rate of COVID-19 cases is 16.0 per 100,000 people. The incidence rate demonstrates how quickly rates of the virus are increasing in the region.

Strengthened public health measures will come into effect in our region on Monday, November 30, at 12:01 a.m. These measures include limited hours of operations for certain settings, reduced recreational program sizes, additional enforcement and fines, and enhanced education in high-risk settings.

“It is crucial that we protect our vulnerable populations and our health care system capacity,” says Dr. Piotr Oglaza, Medical Officer of Health and CEO at Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH). “The level of transmission in our region has increased quickly over the past week, requiring additional preventative measures. To avoid further restrictions, I ask all residents to redouble their efforts at this critical time. Please continue to ask yourself: ‘What can I do to reduce my risk of exposure and help limit the spread of COVID-19? What can I do to protect my family, friends and community?’”

HPEPH recommends all residents practice five fundamental actions to protect themselves and others:

  • Stay home when ill, as directed by provincial assessment tools;

  • Always physical distance with those outside your household;

  • Wear a mask or face covering in public spaces, as well as when physical distancing is difficult or not possible;

  • Wash your hands often, and clean frequently touched surfaces;

  • Get tested if you have symptoms of COVID-19 or have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19.

In addition, HPEPH asks that all individuals respect requests to avoid non-essential travel and stay as close to home as possible. This is especially important when considering travel to and from regions with higher rates of COVID-19 transmission. HPEPH understands that it can be discouraging to witness increased rates of the virus in our region. Be kind to one another as we work together to stop the spread.

HPEPH continues to work closely with area businesses and organizations to provide support and answer questions. For detailed information about key changes that will come into effect when HPEC moves from the Green-Prevent to Yellow-Protect category, please see the attached Fact Sheet or visit Ontario.ca.
